Humane Launches AI Pin: A Wearable Powered by OpenAI

On Thursday, Humane unveiled its inaugural device, the AI Pin, marking the culmination of months of demonstrations and teasing about the future of AI-driven gadgets.

Priced at $699, this wearable consists of a square device and a magnetically attachable battery pack. Alongside the device cost, there's a $24 monthly subscription fee providing a phone number and data coverage via T-Mobile's network. Wired reports that shipments are set to commence in early 2024, with preorders starting on November 16th.

The AI Pin, equipped with a Snapdragon processor (specific model unspecified), is controlled through a blend of voice commands, gestures, and a small built-in projector, weighing approximately 34 grams. The device's camera, slated for a software update, captures 13-megapixel photos and records videos. In contrast to constant recording devices like the Rewind Pendant, the AI Pin requires manual activation by tapping and dragging on the touchpad. The "Trust Light" on the Pin blinks to signal when data collection is in progress, emphasizing a deliberate and conscious approach to data privacy.

The primary function of the Pin is to establish connections with AI models through Humane's AI Mic software. Notably, the company references collaborations with Microsoft and OpenAI, with ChatGPT access highlighted as a core feature of the device. Operating on the Cosmos system, the Pin aims to streamline technology interfaces by automatically directing queries to the appropriate tools, eliminating the need for manual app downloads and management.

Humane's objective with the Pin is to simplify the user experience by removing unnecessary interface complexities. The device eschews traditional elements like a homescreen or numerous settings and accounts, emphasizing a user-friendly approach where users can interact with the Pin through voice or touch, stating their intentions, and witnessing automatic execution. In line with recent advancements in text-based commands via chatbots, Humane seeks to encapsulate similar functionality in a tangible gadget.

As for the Pin's capabilities, features highlighted in Humane's announcement include voice-based messaging and calling, an inbox summary feature ("catch me up"), obtaining nutritional information by showing food to the camera, and real-time translation. Although its primary role appears to be a wearable, large language model-powered search engine, Humane plans to expand its functionalities, incorporating navigation and shopping capabilities. Furthermore, the company envisions providing developers with the tools to create their own applications.

Humane sees the AI Pin as the initial phase of a broader initiative, anticipating improvements as underlying models advance. The company envisions a parallel to the smartphone's evolution, where enhanced hardware contributes to an improved user experience, with the true revolution stemming from the expanded possibilities offered by the device. While challenges remain, Humane is poised to embark on this transformative journey.
