SYDNEY - Residents of a remote Papua New Guinea island are in the process of evacuating as Mount Ulawun, located on New Britain island, erupted on Monday.
The volcanic activity has led to the cancellation of flights from the island's Hoskins airport.
Coordination teams have been deployed to manage the evacuation, according to senior disaster management official Clement Bailey.
The ongoing eruption has released a significant ash cloud into the sky. Papua New Guinea, situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, faces frequent volcanic and seismic events due to its location along this tectonic boundary.
