Doha - A Qatari court has acknowledged the submission of an appeal document regarding the death sentences imposed on eight former Indian naval personnel, according to sources familiar with the situation.
India has lodged an appeal against the death penalty given to these eight ex-Navy personnel in Qatar. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on November 9 that the verdict is "confidential," emphasizing the sensitive nature of the case and discouraging speculation. Consular access was granted to the Indian Embassy on November 7.
MEA chief spokesperson Arindam Bagchi stated that a Qatari court issued the judgment on October 26, sentencing the retired naval personnel to death without officially disclosing the charges. Bagchi mentioned that the legal team is pursuing further legal steps, having already filed an appeal. The MEA is actively collaborating with Qatari authorities, securing consular access and engaging with the families of the detained individuals.
Despite West Asian media circulating misconceptions, family members assert that the ex-Indian Navy personnel were in Qatar to assist with the country's naval program, not involved in espionage as alleged. The families stressed the need for accurate reporting and handling of the matter, expressing hope for a prompt resolution. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar assured the families of full government support during a meeting on October 30.
