New York - Donald Trump reversed his decision to testify in his defense in the New York fraud case on Monday, stating that he will not take the stand as initially planned because he has "nothing more to say."
The 77-year-old made the surprising announcement on Truth Social, mentioning that he has already testified to everything in the ongoing trial involving him, his sons Don Jr and Eric, and other Trump Organization executives.
Last month, Trump faced questioning by the prosecution, which accused him and other defendants of inflating the value of their real estate assets to secure more favorable bank loans and insurance terms. During the four-hour session on November 6, Trump clashed with prosecutors, leading to rebukes from Judge Arthur Engoron, who cautioned him that the trial was not a political rally.
In his Sunday statement, Trump asserted that he had already testified "very successfully & conclusively" in the case. The civil suit, brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James, poses a threat to the Trump real estate empire. Before opening arguments, Judge Engoron ruled that James's office had presented "conclusive evidence" that Trump had overstated his net worth on financial documents, leading to the ordered liquidation of companies managing assets like Trump Tower and 40 Wall Street skyscrapers.
The trial involves various charges, including insurance fraud, with the Attorney General's office seeking a financial penalty of $250 million. Unlike some of Trump's other legal battles, this suit carries no risk of jail time. Throughout the trial, Trump has denounced it as a partisan "witch hunt." Despite fines imposed by Judge Engoron for violating a partial gag order, the trial is set to continue without Trump's testimony, with a ruling expected by the end of January.
