New Delhi - In a recent meeting with President Vladimir Putin, India's External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, highlighted the significant strides in bilateral trade between India and Russia, surpassing USD 50 billion. Stressing the potential for further growth, Jaishankar emphasized the need to cultivate a sustainable character in the trade relationship.
"I want to emphasize the advancements in our trade, exceeding a turnover of USD 50 billion, and we believe its potential is just starting to become visible. It's crucial that we give it a more sustainable character, and we discussed how we can achieve that," stated Jaishankar.
Addressing key areas of collaboration, the External Affairs Minister delved into discussions on the nuclear sector, particularly highlighting the signing of crucial agreements related to the Kudankulam project. He revealed the completion of a significant accord regarding nuclear fuel supply, signaling progress in India-Russia cooperation in the nuclear domain.
During the meeting, Jaishankar conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's warm greetings to President Putin and handed over a personal message. He mentioned that PM Modi had sent a letter expressing thoughts on the state of cooperation and recent progress.
"Allow me to convey the personal greetings of Prime Minister Modi. He has sent a letter expressing his thoughts about the state of our cooperation and the progress we have made in recent days. Certainly, he looks forward to visiting Russia next year, finding a mutually convenient date," said Jaishankar, responding to President Putin's invitation to PM Modi.
"I would also like to take the opportunity to share with you aspects of the progress we have made. In the last two days, I had a chance to discuss it with Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov and today with Lavrov," added the External Affairs Minister.
Following the meeting, Jaishankar expressed his gratitude on social media, stating, "Honoured to call on President Vladimir Putin this evening. Conveyed the warm greetings of PM Narendra Modi and handed over a personal message. Apprised President Putin of my discussions with Ministers Manturov and Lavrov. Appreciated his guidance on the further developments of our ties."
Jaishankar is currently on a Russia visit from December 25 to 29 as part of the ongoing high-level exchanges between the two nations.
