ABU DHABI, GAZA, JERUSALEM - U.S. State Secretary Antony Blinken embarked on a crucial diplomatic mission to the Middle East as concerns mount over the Gaza conflict's potential regional ramifications. After issuing a warning that the conflict could escalate without concerted peace efforts, Blinken held talks in Jordan and Qatar before heading to the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
Blinken emphasized the urgency of preventing civilian casualties in Gaza during a press conference in Doha. He expressed the need for Israeli officials to take further measures to safeguard civilians and ensure the return of Palestinian civilians to their homes. Jordan's King Abdullah urged Blinken to leverage Washington's influence over Israel for an immediate ceasefire, cautioning against the "catastrophic repercussions" of an ongoing military campaign.
Despite global calls for a ceasefire, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remained resolute, vowing to continue the fight until all goals were achieved, including the elimination of Hamas, the return of hostages, and neutralizing the threat from Gaza.
Israeli officials reported significant casualties on their side, with Hamas' October 7 attack resulting in 1,200 deaths and 240 hostages taken. Israel's offensive in Gaza has now claimed the lives of 22,835 Palestinians, according to Palestinian health officials.
Over the weekend, intense gun battles were reported in Gaza, leading to 50 deaths in Khan Younis. Israeli airstrikes also targeted journalists in southern Gaza, resulting in two fatalities. The conflict has displaced the majority of Gaza's population, leaving homes and infrastructure in ruins amid shortages of essential resources.
In a social media post, Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri expressed disappointment that Arab and Islamic countries had not supported South Africa's call for genocide proceedings against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
Blinken discussed efforts to free hostages held by Hamas during his visit to Qatar.
Outside Gaza, violence persisted in the West Bank, where clashes between Palestinians and Israeli forces led to casualties on both sides. The situation remains fluid as Blinken continues his diplomatic efforts to ease tensions and avert a wider conflict in the region.
