Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, has voiced deep concern over the escalating tensions in the Middle East, emphasizing the need for measures to prevent a broader conflict. Speaking at the Italian Senate during an event dedicated to the late Cardinal Achille Silvestrini, Cardinal Parolin expressed unease over recent events, including Houthi rebel attacks in the Red Sea, increased violence in Gaza, and an Iranian missile assault on Erbil, in Iraqi Kurdistan.
Highlighting the potential for further escalation, Cardinal Parolin stressed the importance of controlling reactions to avoid a general outbreak of conflict. Pope Francis also echoed these concerns during the weekly General Audience, expressing solidarity with the victims of the rocket attack in Erbil and urging dialogue and cooperation to build good relations between nations.
Reiterating the Holy See's stance, Cardinal Parolin advocated for a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine, emphasizing the need for dialogue to find a resolution. Additionally, he discussed the Holy See's efforts in Ukraine, focusing on the humanitarian dimension amid President Zelensky's call for a Peace Conference in Davos. Cardinal Parolin confirmed the Holy See's participation if the conference takes place, building on its previous involvement in similar initiatives.
