The Supreme Court has asked the Election Commission of India for clarifications on the 100% verification of EVM votes with VVPAT slips. The court has requested an officer from the Election Commission to appear and respond to its queries at 2 pm today.
Recently, the court heard a series of public interest litigations on this issue and reserved its verdict. It also cautioned against overly suspicious views towards EVMs, highlighting that India's technology is comparable to that of other countries.
VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) is a mechanism that provides voters with visual confirmation of their vote. After casting their vote, voters can see a paper slip displaying the candidate's details for seven seconds.
The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and activist Arun Kumar Agarwal filed a petition advocating for the counting of all VVPAT slips. The VVPAT system was first introduced in 2014 and was extensively used in subsequent elections, including the 2017 Goa Assembly elections and the 2019 Lok Sabha elections across all 543 constituencies.
