Pope Francis received messages of prayer and well-wishes from across the globe in honor of his Name Day, the feast of St. George. Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pope's baptismal name, reflects the heritage of St. George, a Christian martyr from Cappadocia who died in 303 A.D. for refusing to renounce his faith during Diocletian's persecution.

In recognition of this day, which has been an official public holiday in the Vatican since Pope Francis declared it so in April 2016 through Article 50 of the General Regulations of the Roman Curia, Pope received an outpouring of affection and gratitude.

Saint George's Day is celebrated on 23 April, the traditionally accepted date of the saint's death in the Diocletianic Persecution.

 President Mattarella emphasized the relevance of Pope's recent remarks against threats to human existence, especially in the context of ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. He praised Pope Francis's consistent calls for fraternity and peace, noting their impact on global conscience and their potential to foster justice and peace among both believers and non-believers.

Over the years, Pope has marked his Name Day with various gestures of kindness and solidarity. For instance, in 2013, he celebrated Mass with the cardinals, and in 2018, he distributed ice cream to Rome's needy through the Apostolic Almoner. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he provided medical supplies to hard-hit hospitals in Spain, Romania, and Italy.

Most recently in 2021, during continued pandemic conditions, Pope Francis made an unannounced visit to greet 600 poor and homeless individuals being vaccinated at the Paul VI Hall, which was temporarily transformed into a clinic. During this visit, he also helped distribute treats and traditional Easter chocolates to those present, in line with health guidelines.
