India's federal police have apprehended four individuals associated with a human trafficking network accused of deceiving young Indian men with promises of lucrative jobs or university admissions in Russia, only to coerce them into fighting in the Ukraine conflict. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) disclosed that around 35 men fell victim to this scheme.
The arrested suspects include a translator, a person responsible for visa arrangements and airline bookings, and two primary recruiters from Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The CBI confirmed an ongoing investigation into other individuals involved in this international trafficking network.
Families of two deceased Indian victims reported that their relatives had traveled to Russia expecting civilian support roles but were drawn into military engagements. India's foreign ministry has engaged with Russia on each case, but Moscow has not responded to media queries.
India has refrained from condemning Russia directly for the war, advocating instead for diplomatic resolutions. The countries have maintained a longstanding relationship, trading goods ranging from fighter jets to tea. Additionally, India has notably increased its purchase of Russian oil during the conflict, with Moscow becoming its top oil supplier for the second consecutive fiscal year.
