Fulani herdsmen launched a deadly assault on Ambe village in southern Kaduna state, Nigeria, on May 5, resulting in the deaths of six Christians and leaving eight others wounded. Armed with guns, machetes, and clubs, the attackers shot into homes while residents slept. Daniel Amos, a member of Nigeria’s National Assembly, condemned the attack, emphasizing the need for security agencies to swiftly apprehend the perpetrators. Mansir Hassan, spokesman for the Kaduna State Police Command, confirmed that one assailant had been apprehended, and investigations were ongoing.
Nigeria continues to be a dangerous place for Christians, according to Open Doors’ 2024 World Watch List (WWL) report, with 4,118 Christians killed for their faith from Oct. 1, 2022, to Sept. 30, 2023. The report also highlights Nigeria's high number of kidnappings of Christians and attacks on Christian buildings. Fulani herdsmen, predominantly Muslim, are identified as perpetrators in some attacks, with motivations believed to include land disputes and religious tensions.
