Russia launched multiple waves of drones on Kyiv in one of the largest attacks of its kind targeting Ukraine, according to the city's military administration on Wednesday. The Ukrainian capital was under air raid alerts nearly all night. By 6:30 a.m. (0330 GMT) on Wednesday, Ukraine's air defense systems had destroyed more than 30 drones, marking Russia's seventh attack on Kyiv in July, reported Serhiy Popko, the head of Kyiv's military administration. He described it as "one of the most massive attacks on Ukraine with attack drones during the entire war" on the Telegram messaging app.
As of the latest operational report, there were no casualties or damage in Kyiv. The full extent of the attack remains unclear, and there has been no immediate comment from Russia. However, Russian state news agencies, citing Russian fighters in Ukraine, reported that the attacks targeted several military airports and warehouses across Ukraine. Air raid alerts were issued for Kyiv and most of central and eastern Ukraine starting at 2000 GMT on Tuesday.
Air defense systems were activated multiple times throughout the night on the approaches to Kyiv and in the surrounding region, Popko noted. Kyiv's Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated on Telegram that the attack on the city came from several directions. Reuters witnesses reported hearing multiple blasts during the night, which sounded like air defense systems repelling an air attack.
