It was in the second century when St. Emygdius lived. Pope St. Marcellus installed him as a bishop and sent him to preach the gospel. When Emperor Diocletian persecuted him for his profession of Christ, he was awarded the crown of martyrdom.
Emygdius was a highly effective missionary to the German city of Trier. But the non-converts rebelled when he started smashing pagan idols, so he had to escape to Rome to be safe. Before he could convert anyone else, pagans martyred him when he returned to his mission.
Sometime in the year 303, he was beheaded. Relics of Emygdius are located at Ascoli Piceno, Italy.
He is revered as the patron against earthquakes.
