Syro-Malabar Church Gears Up for Fifth Major Archiepiscopal Assembly

The Syro-Malabar Church is set to host its Fifth Major Archiepiscopal Assembly, a significant gathering of Bishops, Priests, Religious, and Lay representatives from August 22-25, 2024. Held at the Alphonsian Pastoral Institute in Pala, this assembly will focus on the theme "Mission and Response of the Syro-Malabar in Response to the Needs of the Time." Discussions will cover three main topics: Renewal of Faith Formation, Lay Participation in Evangelization, and Empowering the Syro-Malabar Community. The Assembly, delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is a consultative body that aids the Major Archbishop and the Synod of Bishops in making important decisions for the Church.

Established in 1992 when the Syro-Malabar Church was elevated to Major Archiepiscopal status, the Assembly serves as a crucial forum for deliberation and collaboration. According to the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches, it is meant to be convened every five years. Since the first Assembly in 1998, subsequent gatherings took place in 2004, 2010, and 2016. This year's Assembly is hosted by the Eparchy of Palai, with preparations overseen by Mar Pauly Kannookadan and Mar Joseph Kallarangatt.

The Assembly's composition has evolved over the years, reflecting the Church's growth. In 2016, there were 488 participants, but this year's event will have 360 members, including Bishops under 80, Priests, Religious, and Lay representatives. This change, approved by the Apostolic See, aims to facilitate effective dialogue and idea exchange.

The Synod of Bishops emphasizes the Assembly's role in addressing contemporary challenges and fostering the Church's mission. They call upon the faithful to pray for the participants to be guided by the Holy Spirit, promoting the Church's growth and glorifying God. The Karozutha, a prayer accompanying this circular, will be recited during the Holy Qurbana from August 4 onward.

The Fifth Major Archiepiscopal Assembly promises to be a pivotal event, shaping the future of the Syro-Malabar Church in its mission and outreach efforts.
