Kolkata: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has submitted all documents related to alleged financial irregularities at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This move comes following a court order directing the transfer of these documents to the CBI as part of the ongoing investigation into the case.
Former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, appeared at the CBI Special Crime Branch office located in the Central Government Offices (CGO) Complex in Salt Lake, Kolkata, earlier today. The Calcutta High Court recently transferred the investigation of financial misconduct, initially handled by the SIT, to the CBI. The court has also permitted the CBI to conduct polygraph tests on Ghosh and five other individuals connected to the case. These individuals include four doctors who were present with the deceased doctor on the day of the incident and a civic volunteer.
The High Court's decision was prompted by a petition filed by Akhtar Ali, the former deputy superintendent of the hospital, who accused Ghosh of financial misconduct and unethical practices. The investigation into these financial irregularities is being conducted alongside the ongoing probe into the tragic incident involving the death of a trainee doctor at the hospital.
In a related development, the Sealdah Court on Friday remanded Sanjay Roy, the main accused in the case of the postgraduate trainee doctor's death, to 14 days of judicial custody. His custody will remain under CBI supervision until September 6, 2024.
The Supreme Court had earlier ordered the security at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to be handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in response to the ongoing case. This decision, made during a suo motu hearing, aims to enhance security measures at the hospital amidst growing public unrest in West Bengal.
The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024. The case has since drawn significant attention, with various protests taking place across the state. The deployment of CISF personnel is expected to strengthen security and help maintain order during this sensitive period.
The CBI has been granted three weeks by the court to submit a progress report on the investigation, with the report due on September 17, 2024.
