Syro-Malabar Church Elects New Leadership for Permanent Synod

The Syro-Malabar Church has elected new members to its Permanent Synod. The election took place during the third session of the 32nd Synod of Bishops, currently being held at the church's headquarters. The newly elected members of the Permanent Synod are Mar Joseph Kallarangatt, Bishop of the Diocese of Pala, Mar Andrews Thazhath, Archbishop of Thrissur Archdiocese, Mar Joseph Pamplany, Archbishop of Tellicherry Archdiocese, and Mar Mathew Moolakkatt, Archbishop of Kottayam Archdiocese.


In the absence of the Permanent Synod members, the following bishops have been elected as substitutes: Mar Thomas Tharayil, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Changanassery, Mar George Madathikandathil, Bishop of the Diocese of Kothamangalam, Mar Pauly Kannookadan, Bishop of the Diocese of Irinjalakuda, and Mar Remigiose Inchananiyil, Bishop of the Diocese of Thamarassery.

The Permanent Synod is a committee that assists the Major Archbishop in ordinary administrative matters and during emergencies. The Synod, chaired by the Major Archbishop, consists of five bishops, including the Major Archbishop himself. The term of the committee is five years, according to a press release by Rev. Dr. Antony Vadakkekkara VC, the spokesperson of the Syro-Malabar Church.
