The death of John the Baptist, who paved the way for Jesus, is commemorated on this day by the Church. He lived in seclusion in the wilderness as an adult. He preached that in order for the people to be ready for the Messiah, they needed to confess their sins and get baptized after being inspired by the Spirit.
Herod imprisoned John for accusing him of adultery by living with his brother's wife, Herodias.
When Herodias' daughter performed a dance for him at the birthday celebration, Herod was so charmed that he promised to give her anything she desired. After consulting with Herodias, she was instructed to request John the Baptist's head on a platter. Because of the girl's pledge, Herod was unable to refuse and killed John, even though he did not want to because of concern for what his people may do.
