Nashville: Colin Smith, a University of Notre Dame student, shared that his entire family converted to Catholicism on August 15, during the solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He credits this spiritual journey to God overcoming challenges along the way.
Three years after Colin's own conversion, his family joined the Catholic Church. They had previously attended various Protestant churches, but their exposure to Catholic doctrine, including letters Colin wrote explaining the faith, played a significant role.
However, Colin emphasized that the true catalysts for their conversion were external influences, including a secular progressive school his sister attended, which led her to St. Cecilia Academy in Nashville, run by Dominican Sisters.
The Dominican Friars and Sisters, especially Father Dominic Legge, became pivotal in Colin's spiritual development, guiding him through theological readings and discussions. Colin converted to Catholicism in 2021 and was received into the Church by Father Dominic at the Dominican House of Studies.
A visit to Rome, particularly the Circus of Nero, was instrumental in his mother's conversion. The family’s faith journey was marked by paradoxical influences, where even opposition to Catholicism played a role in drawing them closer to the Church.
The Smith family now attends Mass together whenever possible, with all three children studying at Notre Dame. Reflecting on their journey, Colin remarked that while God uses his followers to bring others into the Church, ultimately, it is His providence that prevails.
