Kottayam: In a decisive move aimed at strengthening youth participation in the democratic process, the Syro-Malabar Youth Movement (SMYM) of Pala Diocese, in association with the AKCC Youth Council, has constituted a Political Affairs Committee. The initiative is designed to prepare young leaders for active engagement in the upcoming local government elections.
The committee seeks to foster political involvement that transcends party affiliations, focusing instead on nurturing committed individuals who can contribute to the common good. Highlighting the upcoming elections as a “priority concern,” the forum resolved to identify and mobilize parish-based youth candidates with leadership potential. The emphasis will be on empowering individuals who reflect values of service, integrity, and responsibility, rather than aligning with political party agendas.
The gathering, attended by representatives from across political spectrums, recommended that a comprehensive list of interested youth aspirants be compiled from each parish unit. Support, the committee stated, should be extended to candidates as individuals, ensuring that political involvement is centered on people-oriented service and not party-driven agendas.
SMYM Pala Diocese President Anwin Soni Odachuvattil presided over the meeting, setting the tone for a constructive dialogue on youth leadership. The session also saw participation from Diocesan Director Fr. Mani Kankankutty, General Secretary Robin Thannimala, alongside youth leaders Edwin Josey, Mijo Joy, and AKCC Youth Coordinator Clint Areeplakkal, who played a key role in steering the discussion.
With this step, the Pala Diocese youth organizations are sending a strong message: that the future of governance lies in the hands of a value-driven, dynamic, and socially conscious younger generation.
