Venetian-born Italian bishop Gerard Sagredo served as an instructor for Saint Emeric of Hungary, the son of Saint Stephen of Hungary, while he was in the Kingdom of Hungary, primarily in Budapest. He had an important part in the conversion of Hungary to Christianity. He served as the Csanád bishop.
Gerard was martyred on September 24, 1046, atop a hill near Budapest that has since been named after him. A two-wheeled cart is said to have been used to carry him to the top of the hill and roll him down. When he arrived at the bottom, he was beaten to death while still alive. According to other unconfirmed stories, he was placed in a barrel with spikes to roll down.
He was canonized in 1083, together with St. Emeric and St. Stephen. St. Gerard is revered as one of the patron saints of Hungary.
