Panaji: In Goa, India, police are actively searching for a Hindu man accused of publicly disrespecting St. Francis Xavier, a revered figure in the region. The allegations have prompted a strong response from the local Christian community, who hold St. Francis in high esteem and view him as the protector of Goa reported by Indian Express. As stated in the FIR, the accused is alleged to have made a speech with "malicious intent" that purportedly defames St. Francis Xavier, causing offense to the religious sentiments of the complainant, their faith community, and others.
The controversy erupted following comments made by Subhash Velingkar, a former leader of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a prominent Hindu organization.
During a public meeting on October 1, Velingkar questioned the authenticity of the relics of St. Francis Xavier housed in the Basilica of Bom Jesus, suggesting they should undergo DNA testing to verify their origin. He controversially claimed that the relics might belong to a Buddhist monk from Sri Lanka rather than the saint himself.
The upcoming exposition of St. Francis Xavier's relics, which occurs once every ten years, is scheduled to take place from November 21, 2024, to January 5, 2025. This significant event typically draws millions of pilgrims and showcases the deep devotion of Goans to the saint, known locally as “Goencho Saib.”
Velingkar's remarks have ignited outrage among the Christian community, leading to the filing of over a dozen complaints against him for allegedly insulting religious beliefs under the Indian Penal Code. Father Savio Fernandes, secretary of the Council for Social Justice and Peace of the Goa Archdiocese, condemned the statements and called for strict action against Velingkar. He emphasized that such comments not only offend Catholics but also many individuals from other faith communities who venerate the saint.
Goa, known for its rich Catholic heritage due to over four centuries of Portuguese rule, has approximately a quarter of its population identifying as Christian. St. Francis Xavier arrived in Goa in 1542 and played a pivotal role in spreading Christianity in the region. The last exhibition of his relics attracted millions of visitors, showcasing the enduring respect and devotion he commands among Goans.
The current atmosphere in India has been marked by rising Hindu nationalism, with increased reports of violence against religious minorities, particularly Christians. This climate has raised concerns about religious freedom and tolerance across the country. In response to the recent tensions, more than 300 people, including local political figures, gathered in Margao to protest against Velingkar's statements, further highlighting the communal sensitivities at play.
As authorities continue their investigation, the Church has called for peace and urged citizens to focus on more pressing issues facing the state, rather than allowing provocative statements to escalate tensions. Local leaders, including former Chief Minister Churchill Alemao, have filed complaints against Velingkar, asserting that such remarks threaten the communal harmony that has characterized Goa for generations.
The situation remains fluid, with both sides advocating for their positions, as the police continue to investigate the allegations against Velingkar.
