In an unprecedented move, Pope Francis will release his first autobiographical memoir, titled "Hope," on January 14, 2025. The memoir will be published globally in over 80 countries by Random House Publishing, marking the first time a sitting pope has authored and published a memoir.
Originally slated for posthumous release, Pope Francis decided to publish the memoir ahead of the 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope, a special occasion in the Catholic Church that occurs every 25 years. Jubilee years are marked by grace and pilgrimage, offering unique spiritual opportunities for the faithful.
“Hope” delves into the personal and spiritual journey of Pope Francis, beginning with his family's emigration from Italy to Latin America, and covering his childhood, adult life, and papacy. The Holy Father described the book as a “journey of hope” that cannot be separated from the story of his family, his people, and God’s people. "In every page, in every passage, it is also the book of those who have traveled with me," pope stated in a press release.
Co-written with Italian publisher Carlo Musso, “Hope” features previously unpublished stories and personal reflections, offering a deeply personal perspective on pope's life and legacy. The memoir comes on the heels of his last book, “Life: My Story Through History,” which was published in March 2024, where he recounted his experiences during major historical events, including the 1976 Argentina coup and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pope Francis’ growing presence in the media has been noted as a deliberate effort to shape how his papacy and reforms are perceived. Matthew Bunson, Vice President and Editorial Director of EWTN, noted that while modern popes have embraced the media, Pope Francis' approach has been particularly proactive. His memoir is seen as another significant step in defining his legacy for both the Church and the world.
The release of “Hope” ahead of the Jubilee Year emphasizes pope’s message of faith and resilience as central themes for the Church’s future.
