On World Mission Sunday, Pope Francis presided over a Canonization Mass in St. Peter’s Square, elevating 14 new saints, including 11 martyrs who were killed in Syria for refusing to renounce their faith. Among those canonized were Father Manuel Ruiz López, the brothers Francis, Mooti, and Raphael Massabki, and Sisters Marie Leonie Paradis and Elena Guerra. Pope praised their heroic virtues and emphasized their steadfast commitment to living lives of Christian service.
In his homily, Pope Francis highlighted the core of their Christian witness, stating, “These new saints lived Jesus’ way: service.” He noted that their faith and mission were not driven by worldly ambitions or power, but by their unwavering dedication to serve others. "They made themselves servants of their brothers and sisters, creative in doing good, steadfast in difficulties, and generous to the end," Pope said, encouraging all Christians to embrace this path of humble service.
Reflecting on the Gospel reading from Mark, Pope recalled Jesus’ profound questions to His disciples, James and John: “What is it you want me to do for you?” and “Are you able to drink the cup that I drink?” Pope Francis explained that these questions reveal the deeper desires within us, challenging us to move away from self-interest and ambition. James and John, despite their devotion, sought positions of honor and glory, envisioning a Messiah who would rule with power.
However, Pope reminded the faithful that Jesus’ kingship is not one of domination but of service. "On His right and left, there would be no thrones, but two thieves, crucified alongside Him, suffering and dying with Him in ignominy," he said, underscoring that the path of discipleship leads to the cross—a life of love, sacrifice, and humble service.
Pope Francis urged Christians to heed the call of Jesus, recognizing that true greatness comes through serving others. He concluded by upholding the examples of the newly canonized saints, who did not seek their own glory but lived for the glory of God. “Let us pray through their intercession, so that we too can follow Christ in service and become witnesses of hope for the world,” he said.
The canonized saints were lauded for their unwavering faith and selfless dedication, embodying the heart of the Christian mission in their respective vocations.
