New Delhi: The Central government has issued a notice to Wikipedia, highlighting complaints of bias and inaccuracies on its platform. According to PTI, the notice also questions why Wikipedia should not be classified as a publisher rather than an intermediary when facing legal action. The Information and Broadcasting Ministry pointed out that editorial control may be in the hands of a small group of individuals.
Wikipedia, widely known as a free encyclopedia edited by volunteers, allows users to create and edit content on various topics, including people and current events. However, it currently faces multiple legal challenges in India over alleged inaccurate or defamatory content.
This latest notice follows ongoing proceedings in the Delhi High Court, where Asian News International (ANI) has sought the identities of those who edited its page, reportedly labeling ANI as “the propaganda tool” of the Indian government.
During a hearing, Justice Subramonium Prasad reportedly questioned Wikipedia’s role as an intermediary, stating, “If someone else made an unverified addition, it should be removed. They are not here to protect...” The court expressed concern over Wikipedia’s stance of disclaiming endorsement of its own content despite positioning itself as an encyclopedia.
