Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina extended her congratulations to Donald Trump following his recent win in the United States presidential election. In a statement shared by her political party, the Awami League, on social media platform X, Hasina described Trump’s "resounding election victory" as a "testament to his extraordinary leadership qualities and the immense trust bestowed on him by the American people."
Hasina, who led Bangladesh for multiple terms, expressed fond memories of her interactions with Trump and former First Lady Melania Trump during his initial term in office. She voiced optimism that Trump's return to the White House would further strengthen the ties between Bangladesh and the United States. Hasina reaffirmed her commitment to advancing both bilateral and multilateral interests that benefit both nations.
Trump’s victory over Democratic candidate Kamala Harris saw him securing the necessary 270 electoral votes, reclaiming the presidency four years after his defeat to Joe Biden. Trump won key swing states, including Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia, while leading in several others.
The congratulations come amid a period of political upheaval in Bangladesh. Sheikh Hasina recently stepped down and left the country after increasing domestic protests, a move she has claimed was influenced by U.S. interference. However, the Biden administration firmly denied these accusations, with U.S. Department of State spokesperson Vedant Patel calling the allegations "laughable." Patel emphasized the U.S.’s commitment to transparency and strong partnerships within South Asia.
An interim government, headed by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, is currently administering Bangladesh following Hasina’s resignation.
