Pope Francis at Angelus: Finding Eternal Hope in the Promise of Christ

In his Sunday Angelus address, Pope Francis reflected on the enduring nature of Christ's promises and the transient nature of earthly things, offering comfort and hope to those grappling with the realities of life and loss.

Speaking from St. Peter's Square, Pope began by referencing the day’s Gospel reading: “The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light.” While these words might evoke fear of the world’s end, Pope Francis highlighted Christ’s deeper message: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”

Pope centered his catechesis on a profound distinction—what passes and what remains. Reflecting on life’s fleeting nature, he acknowledged that moments of crisis or failure often feel like the end of everything, even the most cherished aspects of life.

“These crises, though challenging, are important,” the Pope emphasized. They remind us to weigh things appropriately and avoid clinging too tightly to earthly realities. By embracing this perspective, believers can learn to focus on what truly endures.

Pope Francis then turned to what remains eternal: the words of Christ. In Jesus, Pope reassured, nothing is truly lost.

“In Him, we shall one day find again the things and people who have passed away and who have accompanied us in our earthly existence,” he said. This promise of resurrection imbues every part of life with new meaning. “Everything dies, and we too will one day die, but we will lose nothing of what we have built and loved, because death will be the beginning of a new life.”

Concluding his address, Pope Francis invited the faithful to reflect on their priorities. “Let us ask ourselves: are we attached to earthly things, which pass quickly, or to the words of the Lord, which remain and guide us towards eternity?”

This call challenges Christians to focus not on what fades but on the enduring love of Christ, offering hope and reassurance that life in Him transcends even death.

As believers journey through life’s trials and joys, Pope Francis’ words serve as a reminder of the ultimate hope found in Christ, where nothing is ever truly lost.
