Syro-Malabar Archbishop tours Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain

Bahrain: Major Archbishop Raphael Thattil, leader of India’s Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, recently concluded a pastoral visit to the dioceses of Northern Arabia, encouraging the faithful to preserve their “deep connection” to faith and heritage while making meaningful contributions to their host communities.

The Archbishop’s journey included stops in Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain, where he celebrated Mass, engaged with Syro-Malabar communities, and met with local Church leaders.

Originating from Kerala, India, the Syro-Malabar Church has a significant global presence due to the Indian diaspora. Its influence is particularly strong in Northern Arabia—comprising Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia—where large numbers of Indian migrant workers reside.

A statement from the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Arabia highlighted the visit's goal: fostering “stronger ties of faith and solidarity” through engagement with spiritual leaders, congregants, and local communities.

During his celebrations of Mass, Archbishop Thattil stressed themes of “community, unity, and faith,” offering guidance on navigating the complexities of modern life. He urged migrant communities to remain rooted in their spiritual and cultural traditions while playing a constructive role in their new environments.

Accompanied by Bishop Aldo Berardi, Vicar Apostolic of the region, Archbishop Thattil’s visit also underscored the significance of active participation in the broader society.

Bishop Berardi noted that the visit reinforced the spiritual dedication of the Syro-Malabar faithful while emphasizing their role as “integral contributors to the wider community.”
