Kochi: In a breakthrough aimed at providing an affordable solution for detecting and removing residual tumors in breast cancer patients post-chemotherapy, the medical team at Rajagiri Hospital, Aluva, has introduced a novel technique called Clip and Blue Placement.

This innovative method employs surgical clips and methylene blue dye to precisely identify and extract tumors, offering a cost-effective alternative to traditional approaches.

"The procedure begins by inserting three to four surgical clips into the tumor before chemotherapy. These clips remain in place throughout the treatment," explained Dr. Anand Ebin, an oncology surgeon at Rajagiri Hospital. "During surgery, the clips are located using ultrasound, and methylene blue dye is injected around them, creating a clear roadmap for accurate tumor removal."

The financial impact of this technique is significant. “It reduces treatment costs dramatically, from ₹30,000 to just ₹2,000,” noted Dr. Subi T.S., one of the lead oncology surgeons behind the development.

The Clip and Blue Placement technique, refined over three years of rigorous research and trials, has garnered international recognition. It was highlighted by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and published in Global Oncology, an ASCO journal.

Additionally, the method received the "Best Research of the Year" award earlier this year at the National Oncology Conference in Bengaluru, standing out among 800 submissions.

The groundbreaking technique is the result of a multidisciplinary collaboration led by oncology surgeons Dr. Subi T.S. and Dr. Anand Ebin. The team also includes radiologists Dr. Teena Sleeba and Dr. Latha Abraham, head of pathology Dr. Sanju Cyriac, and medical oncologists Dr. Arun Philip and Dr. Ashwin Joy.

With its ability to enhance precision while drastically reducing costs, Clip and Blue Placement marks a significant advancement in breast cancer treatment, paving the way for more accessible and effective care.
