Canada’s new Cardinal: Church’s outreach must ‘start from the human heart'

Vatican City: In an interview with Vatican News, Canada’s newest Cardinal, Archbishop Frank Leo of Toronto, shared his thoughts on the pressing challenges facing the world and the Church today. At 53, Cardinal Leo, one of the youngest members of the College of Cardinals, was elevated during a Consistory held in St. Peter’s Basilica on Saturday, December 7th, alongside 20 other men. Reflecting on his new role, Cardinal Leo expressed enthusiasm about serving Pope Francis in a deeper capacity and building fraternity with his fellow cardinals.

Discussing the challenges confronting the Church, Cardinal Leo highlighted secularism, political polarization, and what Pope Francis has termed the “throwaway culture.” He emphasized the need for a transformative “spiritual awakening” that begins with the human heart and rekindles a relationship with God. Such renewal, he said, should inspire humanity to bring “the newness of life, of God, into the world today.”

Cardinal Leo also underscored the vital importance of ministering to families and young people. He acknowledged the unique pressures facing today’s youth, citing the prevalence of temptations, confusion, anxiety, and fear. In response, he called for the Church to be both a guide and a listener, urging leaders to “listen with the heart” and genuinely understand young people’s struggles and aspirations.

When asked about efforts to reconcile with Canada’s Indigenous peoples, Cardinal Leo praised the progress being made at local levels, inspired in part by Pope Francis’ 2022 visit. He noted a growing recognition of the importance of respecting Indigenous persons and cultures. Walking together with Indigenous communities, he said, is crucial for “healing our wounded world” and fostering unity.

Cardinal Leo’s insights reflect his vision of a Church deeply engaged with the spiritual and social needs of our time, committed to renewal, compassion, and solidarity.
