Cardinal George Koovakad: It is not my abilities or achievements, but God's providence

Vatican City: Cardinal George Koovakad attributed his elevation to the cardinalate not to his own abilities or achievements, but to the grace of God's providence. Speaking at a grand reception held in his honor by the Syro-Malabar faithful in Rome, following his appointment by Pope Francis, the new Cardinal expressed deep gratitude for the blessings he has received through the support of many individuals. The event, which took place at the Basilica of St. Anastasia, featured a Holy Mass, a congratulatory gathering, and a celebration of fellowship with bishops, priests, monks, and laypeople in attendance.

In his address during the Divine Liturgy, Father Mar Raphael Thattil, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, offered a homily, while Cardinal Mar George Alencherry delivered the blessing at the subsequent gathering. Cardinal George Koovakad emphasized that his position was a reflection of God's loving providence and urged the faithful to continue praying for him.

He also reflected on his life’s foundation, which has always been rooted in his compassion for the poor. He believes their tears have the power to touch heaven and stressed the importance of understanding the circumstances of those who seek our help, offering assistance without diminishing their dignity, and recognizing the divine presence in them. Cardinal Koovakad shared that the strength of his life comes from the influence of people from all walks of life, which he will never forget.
