Cardinal Koovakad:

Vatican City: Cardinal Mar George Koovakad shared that the tears of the poor hold the power to unlock heaven and emphasized that his elevation to the cardinalate was not due to his own merits, but rather through the gracious touch of God’s providence. The newly appointed cardinal made these remarks during a reception hosted by the Syro-Malabar faithful in Rome, celebrating his cardinalate, which was bestowed upon him by Pope Francis on December 7, 2024.

The reception was held at the Basilica of St. Anastasia in Rome, organized by the Syro-Malabar Church. The event was attended by numerous bishops, priests, monks, and laypeople, who gathered on the afternoon of December 8 for the celebrations.

The Cardinal stressed the importance of understanding the circumstances of those who reach out to us, approaching them with empathy and respect, and recognizing the presence of God in their lives.

He also reflected on the profound influence that people from all walks of life have had on his journey and how this remains the source of his strength. As a result, he requested the continued prayers of the faithful. His words were met with a standing ovation from the gathered crowd, expressing their deep respect and appreciation.

The celebrations were graced by the presence of Archbishop Mar Thomas Tharayil of the Archdiocese of Changanassery, Archbishop Joseph Perunthottam, Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara, Bishop Thomas Padiyath, and numerous other clergy and laity.
