Kottayam: The second session of the ecumenical dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Malankara Marthoma Syrian Church convened at the Manganam Spirituality Center. This significant gathering saw the participation of Archbishop Flavia Pache, Secretary of the Vatican's Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity, and Dr. Joseph Mar Barnabas, Suffragan Metropolitan of the Malankara Marthoma Church. Presentations were delivered by Archbishop Flavia Pache, Dr. Joseph Mar Ivanios, Rev. Shibi Varghese, and Rev. Dr. Hyacinth Destivalle.
The theological discussions focused on key themes, including the Synodality of the Church, mission, and baptism. These dialogues are set to continue in subsequent phases. The Vatican's Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity, which fosters ecumenical dialogues with various Christian traditions, initiated its formal engagement with the Marthoma Church last year. Notably, in November, members of the Marthoma Syriac Church Episcopal Synod had an audience with Pope Francis.
The Catholic Church delegation included Archbishop Flavia Pache, Thomas Mar Kurilos, Mar Mathew Moolakkat, Mar Joseph Kallarangat, Bishop Dr. Selvister Ponnumuthan, Fr. Augustine Kadeparambil, Fr. Philip Nelpuraparambil, and Fr. Hyacinthe Destivalle. Representing the Malankara Marthoma Syrian Church were Dr. Isaac Mar Filaxinos, Dr. Joseph Mar Ivanios, Dr. K.G. Pothan, Dr. Eso Mathew, Church Secretary Rev. A.B.T. Mamman, Dr. V.S. Varghese, Shibi Varghese, and Arun Thomas.
