Pope to Taizé young people: God gives us meaning and hope

Pope Francis shared an inspiring message with the young participants of the annual Taizé gathering, urging them to draw nearer to the Christ Child as a wellspring of hope and purpose. He emphasized that a journey of holiness and deepened faith leads to a truly meaningful and fulfilling life.

"God gives hope and meaning to our lives!" the Pope declared in his heartfelt address to the Taizé community, which commenced its 47th European meeting in Tallinn, Estonia. The message, signed by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, reflected Pope Francis' spiritual solidarity with the gathering.

The Pope recalled his 2018 Apostolic Visit to the Baltic nations—Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia—during which he met with youth in Tallinn’s Lutheran church of Kaarli for an ecumenical encounter. There, he celebrated the beauty of unity among Christians, remarking, "How wonderful it is to come together, united by our shared belief in Jesus Christ."

In his message, Pope Francis underscored the value of community and fraternity, particularly in today’s challenging global climate. He highlighted the trials facing the world, including violence, wars, societal inequalities, and ecological crises, and lamented the suffering endured by so many.

“Many nations are scarred by violence and war. Countless individuals face inhumane treatment, while others feel lost amidst societal disparities and the environmental threats confronting us,” the Pope noted with sorrow.

The Holy Father praised the Taizé community’s focus on resilience and hope, echoing the theme of the letter from Taizé’s Prior for 2025, Hope Against All Hope. He encouraged the youth to embrace this message, which aligns with the Jubilee Year’s focus on renewal and faith.

Urging them to persevere, Pope Francis declared, "Walk in hope!" He reminded them that hope is a divine gift that surpasses every challenge, crisis, and fear, providing the strength to move forward. “Hope gives meaning to our time, lights our way, and points us toward the ultimate purpose of life,” he affirmed.

The Pope expressed his trust in the young people, emphasizing their vital role in proclaiming God’s love in today’s world. He assured them that the Church looks to them with confidence, relying on their passion and commitment to share the good news.

Concluding his message, Pope Francis imparted his Apostolic Blessing upon the Taizé community and their families, sending them forth with his prayers and encouragement.
