Fico: Slovakia to Consider Retaliation Following Ukraine's Gas Transit 'Sabotage'

Slovakia’s coalition government will evaluate retaliatory actions against Ukraine after the country halted the flow of Russian gas through its territory to Slovakia, Prime Minister Robert Fico announced Thursday.

In a video message shared on Facebook, Fico revealed that his Smer party would consider measures such as cutting electricity supplies to Ukraine, reducing aid to Ukrainian refugees, and demanding the resumption of gas transits or compensation for the losses Slovakia incurred due to the cessation of Russian gas flows.

The halt of Russian gas exports via Soviet-era pipelines through Ukraine began on New Year’s Day, following the expiration of a transit contract between Russia and Ukraine, marking the end of Moscow’s energy dominance over Europe.

Although Slovakia has alternative gas sources, Fico, who has ceased military aid to Ukraine and advocated for closer ties with Moscow, warned that Slovakia would lose transit revenues and incur higher fees to import non-Russian gas. He also predicted that European gas and electricity prices would rise as a result of Ukraine’s decision.

Fico stated that a Slovak delegation would address the issue in Brussels next Tuesday, after which his ruling coalition would consider retaliatory actions in response to what he described as “sabotage” by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

“I declare that my Smer-SSD party is ready to debate and reach an agreement within the coalition on halting electricity supplies and significantly reducing support for Ukrainian citizens in Slovakia,” Fico said.

He added that Slovakia’s only viable option for sovereignty was the renewal of gas transit or securing compensation mechanisms to offset the nearly 500 million euros in public finance losses.

Last week, Zelenskiy accused Fico of opening a "second energy front" against Ukraine at the behest of Russia.
