Intensified Clashes in Sudan's Omdurman Devastate Civilians and Disrupt Aid Efforts

Omdurman, Sudan – Ongoing fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has escalated in recent weeks, causing significant devastation and disruption to civilian life in the region. The conflict, which began last year due to disagreements between the army and RSF leadership over the nation's future direction, has turned Omdurman into a battleground.

In a statement, the Ombada Emergency Response Room highlighted the dire situation, reporting widespread damage to residential areas caused by stray bullets, shrapnel, and shelling. "The area has been devastated by prolonged fighting, exposing residents to stray bullets and shrapnel striking homes," the statement said.

Most of Omdurman remains under the control of the Sudanese army, while the RSF dominates the capital and parts of the greater Khartoum area. In a bid to regain control, the army has intensified its offensive in Omdurman, reportedly seizing three areas and confiscating weapons abandoned by RSF fighters. Meanwhile, RSF forces are mounting resistance in two neighborhoods.

Residents on both sides of the Nile have reported heavy shelling across the river, with bombs frequently hitting homes and endangering civilians.

Both sides have been accused of targeting civilians and engaging in indiscriminate shelling, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. Emergency response teams and volunteers face mounting challenges in accessing affected areas due to ongoing violence, severely hindering relief efforts.

The conflict has also forced the closure of several health centers supported by emergency response rooms, depriving thousands of residents of vital medical services.

The worsening situation in Omdurman highlights the urgent need for international intervention to address the humanitarian crisis and bring about a cessation of hostilities. As the conflict continues, the toll on civilians grows, with lives, homes, and access to essential services hanging in the balance.
