Pope Francis Appeals for Aid After Myanmar Landslide and Prayers for Peace

Pope Francis has made a heartfelt appeal to the international community to assist those suffering in the wake of a devastating landslide in Myanmar's northern Kachin State. The tragedy occurred overnight on Monday, engulfing a jade mining area and causing significant destruction.

Speaking during his Wednesday General Audience in the Vatican, Pope expressed his sorrow for the loss of life and the plight of those affected. "I am close to the population affected by this tragedy and am praying for those who lost their lives and for their families," Pope Francis said.

According to reports from the Associated Press, the landslide claimed the lives of at least a dozen people, with many others still missing. The disaster also buried or damaged at least 50 homes in the mining region.

Pope emphasized the importance of global solidarity, urging nations and individuals to support those suffering from this calamity. "May these brothers and sisters, who are enduring such trials, not lack the support and solidarity of the international community," he appealed.

In addition to addressing the disaster in Myanmar, Pope Francis highlighted the ongoing suffering in other conflict-ridden regions, including Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, and Myanmar itself. "Let us not forget martyred Ukraine, Myanmar, Palestine, Israel, and so many countries at war," he said.

Pope Francis reiterated his long-standing call for peace, reminding the faithful that "war is always a defeat." He implored prayers for the conversion of those who profit from war, particularly arms manufacturers. "Let us pray for the conversion of the hearts of arms manufacturers because with their products, they help to kill," he urged.

Pope Francis’ message underscores his commitment to fostering compassion and peace. As the people of Kachin State grapple with the aftermath of this natural disaster, Pope’s call serves as a reminder of the global community’s responsibility to stand together in solidarity and work toward a more peaceful world.
