The Syro-Malabar Church has initiated disciplinary action against those involved in the violent episode at Prasadagiri Church. This was reported by the Syro-Malabar Media Commission vide the following circular.
The ongoing violent incidents in the Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese over the implementation of the unified mode of celebrating the Holy Mass are deeply painful and highly condemnable. A recent disturbing incident at Prasadagiri Church has shocked believers worldwide. An elderly priest, Fr. John Thottupurath, was forcefully pulled down from the altar while celebrating the Holy Mass, and a group of aggressive individuals pushed him to the ground. The video footage of this brutal act has sparked widespread concern and distress among the faithful.
The sheer cruelty of the attack is beyond comprehension. What did the perpetrators gain by physically assaulting a priest engaged in the sacred liturgy and desecrating the altar, the holiest place in the church?
The attacks clearly demonstrate a deliberate effort to isolate and intimidate priests who choose to obey the Church’s decision. The violent targeting of clergy through threats, intimidation, and physical assaults reveals a sinister strategy to suppress obedience to the Church. The incident at Prasadagiri Church stands as proof that many priests would be willing to comply with the Church's directives if not for the fear of violence and isolation.
In addition to these attacks, the misappropriation of church property and the intimidation of law enforcement officers have created an atmosphere of lawlessness within the archdiocese. It is crucial to remember that those responsible for such violent acts are, in effect, wounding the very body of Christ—the Church itself.
Strong protests have erupted over the police’s decision to register non-bailable cases against peaceful believers, allegedly based on false narratives spread by anti-Church elements. Meanwhile, disciplinary actions have begun against those responsible for the violent disturbances in accordance with ecclesiastical guidelines. The Church has reaffirmed its commitment to restoring peace and order while upholding the sanctity of the Holy Mass.
