Kochi: The high-level review meeting chaired by the Chief Minister on February 17 regarding the Justice J. B. Koshy Commission report has drawn attention, particularly in light of the Chief Minister’s assurance that the Cabinet will soon deliberate on the report’s recommendations. The directive for departments to promptly implement actionable recommendations while addressing pending ones is a positive sign. The meeting also reportedly found the progress thus far to be satisfactory.
However, the lack of clarity on which recommendations have been implemented and the extent of progress raises concerns. The official statement regarding the high-level meeting on Monday does not provide enough transparency to be fully trusted. Furtermore, the continued reluctance to release the full commission report and engage in discussions with Christian church leaders and community organizations remains puzzling.
For the Christian community to have confidence in the government's commitment to fair intervention, transparency is essential. The government must address reasonable demands and disclose the steps taken so far. Otherwise, as seen before the Lok Sabha elections, such review meetings and statements risk being perceived as mere attempts to create an illusion of action.
To maintain credibility, the government must release a detailed account of the recommendations implemented by various departments and the measures taken. Additionally, publishing the J. B. Koshy Commission report in its entirety and including representatives of the Christian community in further discussions are necessary steps toward building trust.
