Well-wishers are flooding Pope Francis with messages and prayers as he remains hospitalised at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. Since being admitted on the 14th of February for bilateral pneumonia, Pope Francis has received a surge of support from religious leaders, politicians, friends, faithful followers worldwide, and even children in the same hospital battling their own ailments but comforted by the Pope's presence.
Among the standout messages is one from Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople. In his heartfelt handwritten letter, he refers to the Pope as his “beloved brother” and wishes him a “swift and complete recovery,” with hopes for his prompt return to his sacred duties with God’s help.
Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, urged the faithful to unite "as one family in faith" in urgent prayers for the Pope’s well-being. He emphasized that, as a spiritual family, they should stand together in prayer and supplication.
In Lebanon, Cardinal Béchara Boutros Pierre Raï, Patriarch of Antioch of the Maronites, publicly and privately prayed for the Pope’s healing, asking the Lord to help and heal him.
The Symposium of Bishops’ Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) also expressed “solidarity and spiritual closeness” from the faithful across the continent.
In Argentina, Pope Francis' homeland, Archbishop Jorge Ignacio García Cuerva of Buenos Aires called for prayers, expressing love for the Pope and asking God to grant him strength and restore his health.
Messages of support continue to pour in from Bishops and Dioceses across Latin America, including Uruguay, Mexico, Ecuador, Chile, Peru, Nicaragua, and Brazil.
Earlier this week, the Latin American and Caribbean Episcopal Council (Celam), led by Cardinal Jaime Spengler, Archbishop of Porto Alegre (Brazil), sent a letter expressing affection and closeness to Pope Francis. They prayed for him to feel the Lord's strength and consolation and encouraged special prayer intentions during Mass ahead of the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter on the 22nd of February.
In Canada, prayers are being offered for the Pope’s full recovery. Bishop William McGrattan of Calgary, President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), invited individuals, families, parish communities, and Catholic movements to join in prayer. He asked that through Our Lady's intercession, the Lord grants Pope Francis renewed strength, health, and energy to continue his mission as the Successor of Peter and the Vicar of Christ on Earth.
The Bishops of the United States have also shared a special prayer for Pope Francis on their website.
Throughout Asia, Catholic communities share similar sentiments. In the Philippines, Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, President of the Episcopal Conference (CBCP), requested prayers for the Pope’s healing and recovery during this challenging time.
Chinese Catholics are also gathering in prayer and fasting for Pope Francis’ full recovery. The website xinde.org, a reference point for the mainland Chinese community, has been publishing updates on the Pope's health and invited the faithful to say a special prayer.
