North Korea Conducts Strategic Cruise Missile Test Under Kim Jong Un’s Supervision

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised the test-launch of a strategic cruise missile and emphasized full readiness to use the country’s nuclear attack capability, state media reported on Friday.

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the test was conducted as a warning to "enemies" and aimed to demonstrate the preparedness of North Korea’s nuclear forces. The launch took place on Wednesday over the sea off the west coast of the Korean peninsula.

Kim stated that ensuring "powerful striking ability" was key to maintaining deterrence and national defense. "It is the responsible mission and duty of the DPRK's nuclear armed forces to permanently defend national sovereignty and security with a reliable nuclear shield," he said.

North Korea has been developing strategic cruise missiles designed to carry nuclear warheads for several years. Unlike ballistic missiles, cruise missiles are not explicitly banned under United Nations Security Council resolutions, making them a less contentious issue internationally. However, the Security Council has imposed sanctions on North Korea for its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

The missile test comes amid Kim’s recent visits to military schools, where he stressed the importance of ideological and tactical training for young officers. While he did not directly name any country as an adversary, tensions between North Korea, the United States, and South Korea remain high.

Despite past diplomatic engagements, including summits between Kim and former U.S. President Donald Trump, North Korea continues to maintain a firm stance on its defense policies.
