The House Minority Leader announced plans to engage in discussions with Senate Majority Leader Schumer on Sunday, following their contrasting stances on the proposed funding bill

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries plans to connect with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer later Sunday after the two top Democratic leaders recently took sharply different stances on a Republican-led effort to prevent a government shutdown. Jeffries, speaking with MSNBC, noted he had not yet spoken with Schumer since Senate Democrats allowed a House Republican bill to move forward without obstruction.

He cited his attendance at the funeral of the late Rep. Sylvester Turner in Houston but expected to speak with Schumer later in the day. Acknowledging their disagreement over the approach to what he described as a "reckless Republican spending bill," Jeffries made it clear they differ on how the issue was handled.

When asked on Friday if he had lost confidence in Schumer after the Senate Democratic leader and nine others sided with Republicans on the measure, Jeffries deflected with a terse “next question.” The GOP bill, which all but one House Democrat opposed following a leadership push to remain unified, was advanced with bipartisan Senate support.

Despite their divergence on this matter, Jeffries emphasized that he and Schumer align on most issues moving forward, particularly in efforts to counter threats to Medicaid. He highlighted a planned "day of action" on Tuesday, when lawmakers will be in their districts, to rally against Republican efforts to curtail the program. Additionally, he reaffirmed that House and Senate Democrats will work together to push back against the GOP’s broader agenda in the coming weeks, which seeks to advance former President Donald Trump’s policy priorities.
