Clashes Erupt on Syria-Lebanon Border; Aoun Orders Military Response

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has confirmed that he has instructed the army to take action following clashes along the northern and eastern borders with Syria. The renewed hostilities between the crisis-stricken neighboring nations prompted Aoun to declare that Lebanon "will not tolerate" the ongoing border violence, according to a statement from his office on Monday.

The latest wave of conflict, which flared up overnight and into Monday, follows weekend skirmishes that resulted in the deaths of three Syrian soldiers. Damascus has attributed the escalation to Hezbollah fighters and is reportedly in talks with Lebanese military officials to prevent further deterioration of the situation.

Syrian state media, citing anonymous sources, reported that the Syrian army launched artillery strikes on Hezbollah positions in response to the deaths of its soldiers. Meanwhile, Lebanon’s national army command confirmed the clashes via the official National News Agency, stating that reinforcements had been dispatched to "restore security."

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has alleged that armed Lebanese factions played a role in the fighting, though these claims remain unverified. Lebanese military forces have significantly increased their presence in the border regions, with reports of low-intensity skirmishes early Monday following an attack on a Syrian military vehicle.

Additionally, four journalists embedded with Syrian forces sustained minor injuries when an artillery shell, reportedly fired from Lebanese territory, struck their position. The journalists have accused Hezbollah of orchestrating the attack.
