Turkish authorities have detained more than 1,100 individuals, including nine journalists, following large-scale protests triggered by the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. The escalating tensions mark one of the most significant political crises in recent years, as opposition figures and international observers condemn the government’s actions as an attack on democracy.

İmamoğlu, a key political rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, was taken into custody on March 19 on allegations of leading a criminal organization. Charges against him include corruption, bribery, money laundering, and alleged ties to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). His supporters argue that the accusations are politically motivated, designed to sideline him ahead of the 2028 presidential election. The arrest has sparked mass demonstrations across Turkey, with thousands taking to the streets in cities such as Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir to demand his release and denounce what they see as increasing authoritarianism.

Despite the protests remaining largely peaceful, clashes have erupted in some areas, resulting in injuries on both sides. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that at least 123 police officers have been injured since the unrest began. Authorities have intensified their response, deploying security forces and imposing bans on public gatherings.

As part of the crackdown, nine journalists covering the protests were detained, drawing strong condemnation from press freedom organizations. The Journalists’ Union of Turkey called the arrests an attack on media independence, while human rights groups expressed concerns over the suppression of free speech. In addition to the detentions, Turkish courts have blocked over 700 social media accounts, including those of journalists and opposition figures. Platform X has challenged these restrictions, underscoring the growing friction between digital platforms and government control.

International reactions have been swift, with governments and rights organizations urging Turkey to respect democratic principles. The turmoil has also had economic repercussions, with market instability prompting intervention by the central bank to stabilize the national currency.
