Thousands of people gathered in Belgrade on March 24, 2025, to protest against a proposed luxury development by Jared Kushner’s investment firm, Affinity Partners. The demonstration coincided with the 26th anniversary of the 1999 NATO bombing campaign, as protesters argued that the former Yugoslav People's Army headquarters, damaged during the strikes, should be preserved as a historical monument rather than being turned into a high-end complex.
The protest was led by students from Belgrade State University, who have been participating in anti-government demonstrations against President Aleksandar Vucic since December. Many protesters view the development as an attempt to erase history, while opposition group Kreni-Promeni launched a petition against the project, gathering over 10,000 signatures within a day.
The Serbian government’s decision to lease the site for commercial purposes has sparked public outcry, with many citizens demanding the area be used for a museum or cultural site instead. The controversy highlights the ongoing debate over historical preservation versus economic development in Serbia.
