In response to escalating violence and targeted abductions within the Diocese of Auchi, Nigeria, a series of peaceful protests were organized from March 25 to 27, 2025. The demonstrations aimed to draw attention to the urgent need for enhanced security measures and to honor those who have lost their lives due to these heinous acts.
The protests were convened by Ms. Augustina Obozuwa, a parishioner from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Lagos and a native of Edo State. She emphasized that the marches were intended to honor the fallen martyrs of the community, stating, "It's a procession to honor our martyrs. The march is a peaceful march; we are doing rosary recitation and then to the protest ground."
The three-day event encompassed an online campaign, a day of mourning, and a peaceful march featuring the recitation of the rosary. Participants, including both Catholics and non-Catholics, were united in their call for the Nigerian government to implement increased security measures to protect citizens from kidnappings and killings. Ms. Obozuwa highlighted the indiscriminate nature of the attacks, noting that both clergy and laypeople have been targeted. She urged the government to deploy security forces strategically to prevent further atrocities.
Bishop Gabriel Ghiakhomo Dunia of Auchi Diocese supported the protests, describing them as a plea for governmental action against the pervasive insecurity in Edo State. He called for the government to demonstrate political will by empowering the military to eliminate kidnappers and killers from the region's forests. Bishop Dunia also stressed the importance of self-protection, advising the faithful to remain vigilant and trust in God amidst the challenges.
The protests were marked by emotional appeals from community members. Monica Nosa, a participant, expressed the dire situation faced by families, stating, "We mothers are crying! Our children are being killed. Our daughters are being raped. We can’t go to the farm, we can’t go to the market, we can’t even go to church without fear. We need help now!"
The Diocese of Auchi has been significantly affected by the activities of armed herdsmen, leading to the abduction and killing of priests, farmers, and other community members. The peaceful protests served as a platform for the community to voice their anguish and demand immediate action to restore peace and security to the region.
