India Delivers Lifeline to Earthquake-Hit Myanmar: 442 Metric Tonnes of Food Aid Under ‘Operation Brahma’

In a powerful demonstration of regional solidarity and compassion, India has stepped forward to assist neighboring Myanmar in the aftermath of a catastrophic 7.7 magnitude earthquake. The natural disaster, which struck on March 28, 2024, caused widespread devastation and claimed the lives of more than 3,100 people. As part of its comprehensive humanitarian initiative named ‘Operation Brahma,’ India has now delivered a massive consignment of 442 metric tonnes of essential food supplies to support the quake-affected population.

The Indian Navy’s amphibious vessel INS Gharial was deployed to transport the aid, carrying an extensive cargo that included 405 metric tonnes of rice, 30 metric tonnes of cooking oil, 5 metric tonnes of biscuits, and 2 metric tonnes of instant noodles. The ship reached Thilawa Port in Myanmar, located about 400 kilometers from the earthquake’s epicenter, where the formal handover of supplies took place.

India’s Ambassador to Myanmar, Abhay Thakur, led the official handover, presenting the relief materials to U Soe Thein, the Chief Minister of Yangon Region. The symbolic gesture was more than a transfer of goods—it was a reaffirmation of India’s enduring commitment to its neighbor during one of its darkest hours. Images of the handover and the relief efforts were shared by the Indian Embassy in Yangon, showcasing the solidarity and goodwill embedded in the operation.

The Indian government, through this initiative, is not only providing food but also deploying its capabilities across multiple areas including search and rescue operations, medical assistance, and infrastructure support. Operation Brahma reflects India’s wider foreign policy approach rooted in the spirit of “Neighbourhood First” and humanitarian outreach. It is a testament to India’s growing role as a responsible regional power and a first responder in times of crisis.

As Myanmar continues to grapple with the long-term consequences of the earthquake, India’s timely intervention offers not only tangible relief but also a message of hope. The aid is expected to benefit thousands of displaced families, providing immediate sustenance as the country navigates recovery and reconstruction.

This act of humanitarian support further deepens the bond between the two nations and highlights India’s readiness to lead with compassion in times of regional need. Through Operation Brahma, India has once again proven that empathy, action, and neighborly commitment can cross borders even when disasters strike without warning.
