Pope Francis Surprises Faithful with Palm Sunday Greeting in Saint Peter’s Square

At the conclusion of the Palm Sunday Mass presided over by Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, Pope Francis made a surprise appearance in Saint Peter’s Square, offering his personal greetings and well-wishes to the thousands of pilgrims gathered for the liturgical celebration of the Lord's Passion.

Shortly after the final blessing of the Mass,  Pope came out from Saint Peter’s Basilica in his wheelchair and spent around ten minutes among the faithful. With a warm smile, he greeted those present and wished everyone a "Happy Palm Sunday and Happy Holy Week," marking the beginning of the most solemn week in the Christian calendar.

The visit added a deeply personal touch to the day’s celebration, highlighting Pope Francis’ continued commitment to being close to the people despite his ongoing health challenges. It followed his recent public appearances, including his presence at the Jubilee of the Sick and the World of Healthcare, as well as visits to Saint Peter’s Basilica and the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, where he prayed before the icon of Salus Populi Romani.

After greeting the faithful, Pope returned inside the Basilica. There, he took moments for silent prayer at the tomb of the Apostle Peter, followed by visits to the tomb of Saint Pius X and the monument dedicated to Pope Benedict XV.

Pope Francis’ surprise appearance brought joy and encouragement to many, as the faithful prepare to enter Holy Week with hearts renewed in hope and prayer.
