Today is Maundy Thursday, Honoring the Last Supper of Christ with His Disciples

Maundy Thursday, observed during Holy Week, is a sacred day in the Christian calendar that honors the Last Supper—Jesus Christ’s final meal with His disciples before His crucifixion. It is a moment of deep reflection on love, service, and sacrifice.

The name “Maundy” comes from the Latin “mandatum,” meaning “commandment,” referring to Jesus’ instruction to His followers: “Love one another as I have loved you.” At the Last Supper, Jesus not only shared bread and wine—instituting the Holy Eucharist—but also humbled Himself by washing His disciples’ feet, teaching them the importance of humility and service.

In many churches, Maundy Thursday also includes the blessing of the holy oils used in sacraments throughout the year: the Oil of the Sick, the Oil of Catechumens, and the Sacred Chrism. These oils are consecrated during a special Chrism Mass, typically celebrated earlier in the day.

During this Mass, priests also renew their priestly vows, recommitting themselves to a life of service, faithfulness, and dedication to their ministry. It’s a powerful moment of unity and purpose within the Church, as clergy and laity alike reflect on the meaning of Christ’s sacrifice.

As the faithful gather to remember the Last Supper, receive the Eucharist, and witness acts of humble service, Maundy Thursday serves as a profound call to love deeply, serve humbly, and live out the teachings of Christ in everyday life.
