On April 18, 2025, Adelaide bore witness to a moving public expression of faith as more than 1,500 members of the Syro-Malabar Catholic community took part in a Good Friday Way of the Cross procession. The journey began at the Torrens Parade Ground and continued down the iconic King William Street, ending in heartfelt prayers at Victoria Square in the city centre. This striking visual demonstration of devotion transformed city streets into a modern-day Via Dolorosa.
United in Purpose
The event was a collaborative effort spearheaded by three local Syro-Malabar parishes—St. Alphonsa Forane Church, St. Mary’s Parish, and St. Euphrasia Parish. Under the spiritual leadership of Rev. Dr. Siby Kurian Pulickal and Rev. Fr. Abraham Kazhunadiyil, the parishes worked together to foster unity and showcase their shared heritage of faith. It was not just an event but a joint mission to reaffirm Christian identity in the heart of a multicultural city.
A Living Testimony of Faith
The procession featured 53 altar servers, 14 international students adorned in traditional white shirts and orange mundus, and a youth-led passion play that stirred hearts. These symbols of reverence and cultural pride were more than performance—they were a deeply personal reflection of Christ’s suffering and the community’s longing to stand as witnesses to His love, even in the public square.

Backed by a Devoted Community
The event’s success was built on the dedication of numerous individuals—parish trustees, council members, catechism teachers, safeguarding officers, youth animators, and volunteers of all ages. Many parishioners underwent specific training to manage the procession, maintain order, and preserve a prayerful environment. Their behind-the-scenes work was a testament to the power of community when rooted in faith.
A Historic First in Adelaide’s Heart
Although this marked the third regional Syro-Malabar Way of the Cross in Adelaide, it was the first time the event unfolded on public city streets. Previously confined to park settings, this bold move into Adelaide’s urban heart marked a significant milestone—not just for the local parishes, but for the entire St Thomas the Apostle Eparchy. It was a historic act of witness, boldly claiming space for faith in the public sphere.

A Sacred Journey in Perth
At the same time, a similarly moving Good Friday celebration took place in Perth by the St Joseph Syro-Malabar Church parish community, Orange Grove. Under the leadership of Fr. Ajith Cheriakkara, over 3,000 faithful gathered at the Schoenstatt Shrine in Mount Richon. Many carried wooden crosses they had lovingly handcrafted in preparation, and walked prayerfully alongside others in solemn remembrance. The youth ministry’s moving portrayal of Christ’s Passion brought many to tears, transforming the liturgy into a sacred and unforgettable experience.
From the Wood of the Cross to the Light of the Resurrection
Good Friday is a day of deep sorrow that paves the way to Easter’s triumph. The devotion witnessed in both Adelaide and Perth—through carried crosses, collective prayer, and acts of courage—served as a powerful reminder that suffering is not the end of the story. In carrying their own crosses, the faithful stepped into the mystery of redemption. These moments prepare hearts for the joy of the Resurrection and proclaim a timeless truth: through the Cross, love conquers all.
