Dated June 29, 2022, Pope Francis' spiritual testament has been made public, revealing his humble wishes for his final resting place within the sacred walls of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major.
In the Name of the Most Holy Trinity. Amen.
As I feel the dusk of my earthly journey drawing near, I place my trust in the promise of eternal life and share these final wishes concerning only the matter of my burial.
Throughout my years of life and ministry—first as a priest, then as a bishop—I have continually sought refuge in the loving care of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Lord. With this lifelong devotion in mind, I desire that my earthly remains be laid to rest in the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, there to await the Resurrection.
This sacred sanctuary, so rich in Marian devotion, has been a spiritual home for me—where I would always pause in prayer at the beginning and end of every Apostolic mission, entrusting my efforts to the Virgin’s gentle intercession and offering her my gratitude.
I request that my tomb be placed in the side aisle between the Pauline Chapel (dedicated to the Salus Populi Romani) and the Sforza Chapel, precisely where the attached plan indicates. Let the grave be in the earth, plain and unadorned, marked simply with the name: Franciscus.
A benefactor has generously provided for the cost of this burial, and I have arranged for the necessary funds to be transferred to the Basilica. I have entrusted Cardinal Rolandas Makrickas, Extraordinary Commissioner of the Liberian Basilica, with all related arrangements.
May God reward with grace those who have loved me and continue to lift me up in prayer. The suffering that has marked the closing chapter of my life, I offer to the Lord as a sacrifice for peace on Earth and the unity of all peoples.
